“The setting was crackling as was the audience. People were frothing, including the Dons of the media pit, because the then 19yo Bella Hadid was the star of this 2016 show.
Hadid wasn’t as famous as she is now and her walk back then wasn’t impressive, but even though the designer had paid some ludicrous amount for her appearance, she wasn’t contracted for her walk, it’s the froth people want. It’s a lovely camouflage. GLAMoflage.
I am a Bella Hadid fan, now, although am uncomfortable that she is celebrated for her professionally sculpted beauty.
I am from a time when, even though they were polished and airbrushed, the models were artists as well as works of art when ‘on stage’.
Bella can model, she is a super model but a Supermodel? [capital S one word] Yeah, I dunno. Naomi, Yasmeen, Cindy et al were already Supermodels by 20. Now in their 50s… not so much.
[That’s a different story, in Issue 25b’s feature article ‘Ageing. It’s The Way Of The Future. Why Are You Afraid?’.]
What I remember most about this collection [which I had written on Instagram and said out aloud on the riser*] is that finale walk’s track was ‘Formation’ by Beyonce.
LYRICS:
You mix that negro with that Creole / Make a Texas bama / I like my baby heir / With baby hair and afros / I like my negro nose / With Jackson Five nostrils
Earned all this money / But they never take the country out me / I got a hot sauce in my bag, swag
Earned all this money / But they never take the country out me / I got a hot sauce in my bag, swag
That song was chosen by the Creative Director as the finale walk track with not a hint of Melanin in the model formation.
LYRICS:
I go hard (I go hard) / Get what’s mine (take what’s mine) / I’m a star (I’m a star) / ‘Cause I slay (slay), I slay (hey)
I guess all they heard was “…go hard… get… take… star… slay“.
Sigh ladies sigh.
The GLAMoflage was fun. The collection itself was boring.”
