1. Current mood’s 5 favourite songs / pieces of music.
Nina Simone “I Put a Spell on You” / Marvin Gaye “What’s Going On” / John Coltrane “A Love Supreme” / Etta James “I’d Rather Go Blind” / Roberta Flack “The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face”

2. Time travel: when, where and why?
I would like to time travel 30 years into the future to see if the human race has been able to solve the climate crisis and the issues of equality and human rights.

3. How would you describe what you do?
I started my blog Style Crone in 2010, which then evolved to the social media platforms of Instagram and then Tik Tok.
Currently I post about twice a week, which is a reduced frequency from previous years. I meet with my photographer once a week for photos/videos and I take my own photos about once a week as well.
Prior to each shoot, I compose an outfit. This is my art, self expression, and creative endeavor.
After the shoot, I edit the photos/videos, create a post with a caption, and respond to comments from other creators.
My focus is on aging, ageism, sustainable style secondary to climate change, and of course hats.

4. What are you most grateful for?
I am most grateful for my health and well being, which makes it possible to live a full, passionate, and purposeful life.

5. What colour would you use to describe yourself?
I am currently in love with the colour fuchsia.
When I wear this colour I feel bold, confident, energetic, and vibrant.
I have found that colour affects my mood, how I express myself, and is part of the armour that an outfit provides as I venture out into the world.

6. Name some book/s that had an impact on you and why.
1. “Caste: The Origin of our Discontent” by Isabel Wilkerson.
This book describes racism in the US as an aspect of a caste system which is a society-wide system of social stratification characterized by notions such as hierarchy, inclusion, and exclusion, and purity. It was a page turner.

2. “This Chair Rocks: A Manifesto Against Ageism” by Ashton Applewhite.

This book is an eloquent and well-researched exposè of the prejudice that feeds age bias, and a passionate argument to mobilize against it. It changed how I viewed my own aging process and helped me recognize ageist microaggressions and my inner ageist.

7. What’s something that takes up way too much of your time?
Social media takes too much time in my life. Because I’m a creator, It’s necessary for me to be on these platforms. I learn something new everyday in so many areas because of this.

However, I would like to find more balance in my life and not go down the “rabbit hole” as frequently as I do.

8. What thing keeps you going on hard days? What is Faith to you?
If I’m having a hard day, I remind myself that this time will pass, as it always does. I have strategies that I use to cope, such as taking a walk, reading an inspiring book, or talking with a friend.
In terms of faith, I believe in universal energy which is the life force that exists everywhere. I am attracted to the philosophy of oneness, referring to a sense of interconnectedness and unity, where all things are seen as part of a greater whole.

9. What is the craziest thing you’ve ever done (so far)?
In January of 2020, just before the pandemic, I attended a protest for climate change at the Colorado State Capitol.
I was subsequently arrested and spent a night in jail. It was an education and it was for something that I felt passionate about. I didn’t think it was crazy, but some of the people around me thought that it was.

10. Do you have a favourite hat?
My hats are like children and I don’t have a favorite. Sometimes I discover a hat that I have seldom worn, and all of a sudden it becomes a new object of affection.

11. If you could only keep five possessions, what would they be?
My wedding photo album / My deceased husband’s wedding ring. / My wedding ring. / Photos of my children over the years. / One hat chosen from my hat room.

12. What is a favourite way to ground yourself?
I regularly practice meditation, yoga, and putting together outfits to regulate my emotions and center myself.

13. What’s your biggest taste indulgence?
Ice cream is my biggest indulgence! However, I eat a plant based diet, so I give myself the treat of “real ice cream” about twice a year. This practice makes it even more special and delicious.

14. Which instrument would you play if you were in a rock band?
I played the french horn in high school. I think the beautiful sound of this instrument could be the perfect addition to any rock band that I would be interested in joining.
15. Is there a movie you could watch over and over again?

I can’t remember a time when I watched a movie twice. At this point, at the age of 82, I feel that I have only so much time, and there’s always another movie to watch which inspires and delights me.

16. What is your style signature? The Judith Boyd look?
The Judith Boyd look almost always includes headwear and is my style signature.

17. What is it about someone else that makes you gasp at their style?
When I see someone who gives me goosebumps and I feel a sense of wonder, that’s when I know I know I have been touched by their style. They usually present with confidence, are unique and eccentric to a degree, and I am fascinated by their expression, their outfit, and how they carry themselves. It’s one of my favorite life experiences.

18. Who are your style icons?
My two favorite style icons are Isabella Blow and Anna Piaggi. Both were famous hat wearers with exquisite style.
Isabella was an English magazine editor and mentor to the milliner Philip Treacy. She also discovered Alexander Mc Queen.
Anna was an Italian fashion writer who was known for her bright blue hair, liberal use of make-up, and her sense of style that included hats and a colourful mix of vintage and contemporary fashion.

19. THREE things you love about yourself…. and ONE thing you would change.
The three qualities that I love about myself are empathy, resilience and curiosity.
The one thing that I would change was marrying my first husband.
However, to have a negative experience only made me more grateful and appreciative to have found my husband Nelson, who was healing, nurturing, and kind.

20. What has been one of the most defining moments of your life?
The most defining moment of my life was when my beloved husband of over 30 years died in 2011.

Along with Ari Seth Cohen of Advanced Style Nelson inspired me to launch my blog Style Crone during what turned out to be the last nine months of his life.
He had been diagnosed with a rare form of cancer in 2005 and working together on this project was a distraction from devastation.
He was my first photographer and the blog was a last gift from him. It served as a bridge to living a life without him, which I wasn’t sure that I could do.

I blogged through cancer caregiving, through death, grief, and my reinvention. Because of my career as a psychiatric nurse, I was able to write about how these life events felt, as I expressed myself through style.

Nelson is with me today, at the age of 82, as I continue to be creative on social media.
