Kirrah Amosa

KIRRAH AMOSA is, no other way to put it, a total babe.
The vibrant Samoan/Australian R&B recording artist was born with a calling, oodles of joyous sass and a voice that connects with all who have “felt the highs and lows of life”.

Kirrah sings, acts and dances so of course this triple threat star was going to be in a musical and not just any musical… theatre’s newest star show, the award-winning sensation ‘Hamilton’.
Kirrah was with the original cast of ‘Hamilton’ [Australia] that opened in Sydney in March 2021, cast as the “female standby” for major lead female roles.

For ‘Hamilton’ addicts, sorry, Fans Only:- this meant that any time during the musical’s run, Kirrah was required to perform the roles of Eliza Hamilton, Angelica Schuyler, Peggy Schuyler and Maria Reynolds!
“Someone pinch me!” she said at the time.

FOUR major roles for 3 different actresses, 3 because the characters of Peggy Schuyler and Maria Reynolds are usually played by the same actress, called “doubling”in theatre parlance.
Can you imagine ALL the lines and songs and actions and reactions Kirrah had to learn?!  No sweat as she also writes her own songs, produces her music, plays a few instruments and has supported many international and national recording artists.

A multi-skilling total babe, who is also a mother of babies.
Married to her best friend, Kirrah’s Instagram page radiates Mother Earth warmth and lover girl sensuality, liberally sprinkled with island woman joy, practicality and glamour, all shared with honesty and rawness.  After her own times stuck in the shadows, Kirrah uses her music, her platforms, her stages and her calling to share her experiences and be a delight-house, lighting the way and “ensuring everyone knows they deserve to be part of the circle”.

STARLIGHT on
KIRRAH AMOSA

1. Current mood’s 5 songs?
‘Pushing it Down and Praying’ by Lizzy McAlpine,
‘Casual’ by Chapelle Roan,
‘Malu A’e Le Afiafi’ by the Five Stars,
‘Dream Girl’ by Ravyn Lenae

…and the ‘Paw Patrol’ Theme Song thanks to my toddler.

2. Time travel: when, where and why?
This question makes me think too hard.

I need a time that includes the fashion of the 30’s, the music of the 70’s, the simplicity of life without social media but semi-advanced technology like the 90’s, and the freedom for women to progress in business that we have right now.
Anyone know that era?

3. What are you most grateful for?
Obviously the opportunity to be a mother to two perfect little boys. Carrying and birthing healthy children is a gift I will never take for granted.  I try to savour every moment that they are fully dependent on me, even from the slums of Terrible Twos and a 9-month sleep regression.

I’m proud to raise independent, loving boys in a house that invites them to be emotionally vulnerable and show them the strength of powerful, working women.

Teaching the one thing I can’t live without to live without me is the hardest, most rewarding thing I’ve ever accomplished.

4. Do you have a pre performance ritual?
I do a vocal warm up and eat something solid an hour before show time and I Facetime my man while I put my makeup on. Just before I go on-stage I thank the Heavenly Father for the chance to do what I love and no matter if I rolled my ankle or forgot the words.

I thank Him again when I go to bed that night.

5. What colour would you use to describe yourself?
Probably blood red.

I’m unavoidable, bold, hard to get rid of and either angry, hungry or so in love with my boys (all things that make me see red HA!).

6. How would your children describe you?
Emotional, invested, psychotic, chaotic, and grossly in love with their Father even when I’m picking/winning an argument with him.

7. What is your best childhood memory?
Sitting around the dinner table every night as a family and saying our favourite thing that happened that day.

As the oldest of 6 I felt obliged to participate even though it felt silly at the time but I’d give anything to have those simple times together again. I will often get secretly emotional every rare chance we all sit at the dinner table again.

8. What thing keeps you going on hard days?
Okay, we get it – I HAVE KIDS! Beside the most obvious reason I live, fight and breathe (my children and their Dad), I’d say

…I’m motivated to keep moving forward by my parents.

Having me at 17, they sacrificed their lives, social lives, party years, bank accounts and 8-hour sleepful nights to raise 6 healthy kids.
Mum had to drop out of year 12, Dad had to finish year 12, work a laboursome job during the day, wait tables on weekends and sing in pubs till 2am to support a newborn and young mother, and they are still deeply in love and helping me raise my own kids.

Through them I know unconditional love, and my standard of being a parent is incredibly high.

9. What is the craziest thing you’ve ever done (so far)?
Probably go back to full-time work and solo parenting while touring the world in this century’s biggest musical at 3 months postpartum. Twice.

The happiest time of my life that I cried the most. I wouldn’t recommend it!

10. What’s your idea of a perfect holiday?
Somewhere tropical that I can lay in the sun on sand every day and do NOTHING. The ocean is the only thing that can slow me down, the only time my skin is blemish free and… is a natural calming antidote for my crazy children. And lots of food!

I need a rotation of hot wedges, slow-cooked meat and soft bread straight to my sunlounger.

11. If you could only keep five possessions, what would they be?
My acoustic guitar. If we’re talking about material objects, that’s all I really need. Throw away my phone!

12. Do you have tattoos?  If you don’t have tattoos, would you ever get one?
I’m a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and we don’t believe in tattoos but I’d love them everywhere!

I think the closest I’ll get to having tatts is having our malu (traditional Samoan tattoos) on my skin, for the days I feel disconnected or lost, I’ll look down and remember where I’m from…

13. What’s your biggest indulgence?
I struggle with giving myself downtime so I’m embarrassed to say I’m letting myself watch ‘Married at First Sight’ while I do pilates every night.

Winding down while toning up makes me feel better about watching 34 hours of mind-numbing tv.

14. What’s your dream musical?
Paint my green and hoist me in the air, I would give my left leg to play Elphaba from Wicked on stage again.

Years ago I performed in a local production of Wicked, my Dad played the Wizard of Oz. Let’s just say we cried happy tears together every night.

15. Is there a movie you could watch over and over again?
The Grinch Who Stole Christmas‘ (2000). No one has given what Jim gave us since.

16. What is your style signature/your favourite look?
I love my big curly hair with a flower in it.

Particularly when I’m travelling and homesick I’ll wear a sei in my hair to remind me of my grandmother and my home.

17. Name a book that had an impact on you and why.
How to Win Friends and Influence People‘ by Dale Carnegie has completely changed my life.

I’m not good at reading self help books because they bore me… but this transformed how I carry myself in an audition, taught me how to make a lasting first impression, and has helped me cut the dead weight from my life. A MUST READ!

18. What do you want to be remembered for?
I want my children and children’s children to see that hard work pays off. I come from a line of hard workers.

I particularly want to inspire any future daughter I have, let her know that she doesn’t need to choose between herself and a family  It’s possible to have it all.

19. Why do you do what you do?
I could name noble reasons but at the end of the day, I love it.
I love the rush of being on-stage, I love the stress of putting a new show together, I love hearing people hear me sing for the first time
…and I love sharing the gifts I’ve been given.

I feel a responsibility to share it because my grandparents traveled the seas, and because my parents dedicated their lives to giving me opportunities they could only dream of.

I won’t waste their sacrifice.

20. THREE things you love about yourself…. and ONE thing you would change.
I love my deep-rooted culture and all the things I’m continuously learning about where I come from.

I love my strong genes that brightly shine through my brown skin and thick hair, and I love that I can be my own cheerleader when no one is backing me.

I wish I could switch off my work brain and enjoy life a bit more but stuff it! I’ll rest when I’m dead.
